What are Neurotoxins?

Neurotoxin injections are the single most popular injectable cosmetic procedure in the U.S. These treatments are most commonly used to smooth wrinkles around the eyes, frown lines, and forehead creases. However, many patients are surprised to learn that neurotoxins can also be used to slim the face and lift the brow and to address conditions like hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), migraines, and TMJ.

Neurotoxins are injected into the muscle to relax the area and treat signs of aging, such as wrinkles and fine lines.

Neurotoxins Botox Treatment Options

At Koniver Aesthetics Charleston, you can find the best Neurotoxins Botox treatment options. Botox Cosmetic® is the #1 selling treatment of its kind and is the first and only treatment FDA-approved to temporarily reduce moderate to severe frown lines, crow’s feet and forehead lines in adults.

This neurotoxin targets one of the underlying causes of formation of expression lines — the repeated muscle contractions from frowning, smiling, squinting, laughing and raising your eyebrows over the years – that can make you look tired or angry even when you are not.

Botox safely works beneath the surface and temporarily reduces the underlying muscle activity. The treated muscles are relaxed around the injected area, which reduces the skin creasing of these “dynamic wrinkles” that have developed on your face every time you contract muscles to make an expression. The treatment results in a smoother appearance to the skin and can also prevent new creasing from occurring.

Dysport® is an FDA-approved prescription neurotoxin (incobotulinumtoxinA) injected into muscles and used to temporarily improve the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines or ‘the 11’s”) by reducing specific muscle activity. Wrinkles are caused by repeated movements and muscle contractions. One injection into each of five points between and above the eyebrows temporarily prevents muscle contractions that cause frown lines, smoothing the appearance of the skin.

Dysport® gives a natural look as it diminishes and smooths the appearance of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows without changing the movement or look of the rest of your face. Untreated muscles still work normally, so you can continue to express feelings with natural expressions.

Xeomin® is clinically proven and FDA-approved to reduce the glabellar lines – frown lines between the eyebrows – ‘the 11’s.’ When you squint, frown or smile, the muscles between your eyebrows contract, causing the skin to furrow and fold. As your skin ages over time and loses some of its elasticity, these repeated muscle contractions cause persistent frown lines. Xeomin® is a highly purified neurotoxin (incobotulinumtoxinA) which blocks muscle nerve impulses and causes them to relax. Because of this purification process, Xeomin® lacks the accessory proteins in Botox, which means you are less likely to develop resistant antibodies toward it. The result is diminished wrinkles and a more refreshed, youthful appearance.

Celebrities like Christie Brinkley and Gwyneth Paltrow consider Xeomin® one of their top secrets for looking younger naturally.

What to Expect

For all neurotoxin options, a complete treatment takes approximately five to ten minutes.
Before treatment, your practitioner will review the benefits and possible side effects. Your skin will be cleansed and topical numbing cream may be applied, depending on the procedure.
During your treatment, you will be made comfortable and a syringe containing the product is injected in the skin or underlying muscle. Injections are tolerable and feel like a minor pinch. No anesthesia is required. Occasionally there may be mild, temporary redness and/or swelling at the injection site, which typically resolves within the hour.

Mild bruising may occur at injection site; however, we are able to drastically reduce the likelihood of bruising by using AccuVein®. This innovative technology allows your provider to see the location of veins and blood vessels beneath the surface of the skin, thus more easily avoiding them.

When the treatment is over, you are ready to go. There is no downtime. However, as a precaution to keep the product from migrating from the injection site, we ask that you do not massage the injected areas, do not lie flat for at least four hours post-treatment and do not exercise for the rest of the day.

Results

Results vary by product. In general, you will begin to see visible smoothing two to four days after injection. The full effects can occur as early as one or two weeks, or up to 30 days, after treatment. These are temporary treatments and the typical duration of the effect is three to four months.

Disclaimer: Every patient is different, and results may vary due to a number of factors. During your consultation, we will discuss with you the results you can expect and create a custom treatment plan that’s right for you.

Neurotoxins: FAQs

Do I need to be over 40 to start having injectable treatments?
It’s not age that determines usage. Everyone’s face forms lines differently, influenced by cellular changes over time, reduction of collagen, genetic factors or damage by free radicals from the sun and the environment.

Is there anything I should not do after a neurotoxin treatment?
After treatment, avoid exercise and alcohol for 24 hours. Try to not “rub” the neurotoxin around the treated area. It’s best to avoid putting any excessive pressure on the treated area for the first few days – especially when cleansing or applying makeup.

What is the difference between each of the current neurotoxins on the market?
While there are some distinct differences between neurotoxins (they are all made by different vendors with unique selling points), we find that the vast majority of our patients are unable to discern any or much difference between them once injected. Those who can tell the difference between toxins tend to be fiercely loyal to their brand of choice. Different patients have different needs and preferences and what works for one, may not for another. That’s why we carry them all. The only way to truly know is to try for yourself!
