What are Acne Treatments?

Light therapy offers an effective alternative to medications or antibiotics for controlling acne, without the unwelcome side effects of harsh topical treatments.

Acne is the most common skin condition in the United States, affecting up to 50 million Americans annually. Genetics, anxiety, stress, hormones and even hot and humid climates can impact the severity of acne, which can occur at various stages of life and may continue into the 30’s and 40’s.

Treatment Options

BLU-U® Blue Light Treatment is a noninvasive treatment for acne that uses light to kill certain bacteria on the skin. A form of phototherapy, blue light treatments are FDA-approved for acne vulgaris that is moderate or has not responded to other therapies.

When the BLU-U® Blue Light Treatment is used in combination with a photosensitizing agent, it’s called Photodynamic Therapy (PDT). For patients with moderate to severe/cystic acne or simply with mild to moderate acne that has proven resistant to other forms of treatment, this combination can be a game-changer.

PDT is hands down the quickest, safest and most-effective way to control acne and clear the skin. Prior to PDT, Accutane was the gold-standard for treating stubborn cystic acne. However, Accutane comes with a host of unwanted systemic side effects including depression, severe birth defects, changes in night vision, liver abnormalities, and dryness. Conversely, PDT has no negative side effects and works well on the vast majority of patients.

What to Expect

BLU-U® treatments are simple – you simply sit down and a blue light is placed close to the treatment site for approximately 17 minutes. Blu-U is a safe, painless, affordable, yet effective way to help control stubborn acne.

If your provider recommends the two-step Photodynamic Therapy treatment, a photosensitizing agent (Levulan) is first applied to the skin and left to incubate for approximately one hour. Levulan is a 20% aminolevulinic acid and is found naturally in the body, making it a very safe option. You will then sit under the BLU-U® light for approximately 17 minutes to activate the Levulan. Once activated, the Levulan is absorbed by active acne sebaceous glands (the place where acne starts) where it kills bacteria and shrinks overactive oil glands.

Treatment Guidelines

Blu-U Post-Treatment Instructions:
None!

Photodynamic Therapy Post-Treatment Instructions:
After a Photodynamic Therapy treatment, the ALA (photosensitizing drug) will be active in the skin for 48 hours, and during this time the skin may feel hot and you may experience some swelling and stinging. Avoid all sun exposure during this time. At home, you can use cool compresses, frozen vegetables or wet washcloths to soothe it. It’s important to keep the skin hydrated while it’s healing. It will feel very tight and dry at around the 3 day mark. The areas targeted by the treatment will likely get darker in color (compared to the other skin) and then start to slowly peel or slough off. It usually takes about 5 to 7 days for the entire healing process to take place.

Results

For BLU-U® Blue Light Treatment, recommended initial treatments are weekly or twice weekly for four to five weeks. After treatment, the blue light can control your acne, or clear it up for a very long period.

For Photodynamic Therapy, many patients get significant relief with just one treatment while others may need a series of three a month apart.

Disclaimer: Every patient is different, and results may vary due to a number of factors. During your consultation, we will discuss with you the results you can expect and create a custom treatment plan that’s right for you.
