What are Dermal Fillers?

As we age, collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid in the skin begin to degrade. We also begin to lose subcutaneous fat while experiencing bone resorption. Other factors, such as sun exposure, heredity and lifestyle begin to take a toll at this time, and together this results in volume loss, wrinkles and the loss of a youthful appearance.

Dermal fillers are a non-surgical injectable treatment used to address the signs of aging for refreshed, more youthful-looking skin. Benefits include the softening of fine lines and diminishing and smoothing-out of wrinkles. Fillers are often used to replace soft tissue volume loss by adding fullness and contouring, and they can even be used to plump the upper and lower lips. Fillers are also widely used to improve the look of recessed scars.

Most dermal fillers (with the exception of Radiesse®) are made of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) – the natural filler substance in your body. HA gives the skin a plump, hydrated look and replenishes the body’s natural hyaluronic acid. Radiesse® is a calcium-based filler that is not metabolized in the body as quickly as HA, so it has been demonstrated to last longer.

What to Expect

During your treatment, a topical numbing cream will be applied. The numbing cream will be removed after an appropriate amount of time and your practitioner will cleanse and prepare your skin for treatment. You will feel a pinch upon initial injection and will feel some pressure as the product is delivered. Many dermal filler products have a numbing agent in them, so you will continue to feel less of the treatment as it goes on. Most patients find the treatment very tolerable. Your practitioner may manipulate the product as needed.

Depending on the number of areas being treated, the process of numbing, injecting, massaging, evaluating the results, and adding more filler, if needed, may be as short as fifteen minutes or as long as half an hour. The amount of filler administered depends on the depth and size of the area being treated. You may be offered an ice pack to reduce swelling and alleviate discomfort afterwards. The areas treated may be a bit tender for a day or two, but usually not painful enough to require any medication.

Mild bruising may occur at the injection site; however, we are able to drastically reduce the likelihood of bruising by using AccuVein®. This innovative technology allows your provider to see the location of veins and blood vessels beneath the surface of the skin, thus more easily avoiding them.

Dermal filler injections require very minimal downtime, allowing patients to resume their normal activities directly following treatment. You may be instructed to refrain from strenuous activities and excessive sun or heat exposure for the first 24-48 hours to minimize swelling and bruising.

Treatment Guidelines

Schedule your dermal filler appointment at least two weeks prior to a special event which you may be attending. Results from the dermal filler injections will take approximately 2-14 days to appear and will soften over time.

You should not schedule any invasive procedures for two weeks before or after your treatment. These can include but are not limited to dental work, including dental cleaning, any lesion excisions/biopsies, surgery of any kind, internal device placement, tattoos or permanent makeup.

Results

Results are apparent immediately and improve as any swelling or bruising dissipates and the product integrates into the tissue. Effects typically last from six to twelve months, depending on the injection site and volume. The filler is naturally broken down and metabolized by the body without any long-term negative side effects. Effects will gradually fade, so touch-ups once or twice a year will maintain the look.

Disclaimer: Every patient is different, and results may vary due to a number of factors. During your consultation, we will discuss with you the results you can expect and create a custom treatment plan that’s right for you.

Dermal Fillers: FAQs

Do you always get the same amount of filler each time?

Dermal fillers do not stop your skin from aging completely, so you could need more filler to get the same results over time.

What if you are not happy with the results?

If you are not happy with your results, hyaluronic acid fillers (i.e. the majority of fillers) can be dissolved within minutes with hyaluronidase. Further, all results are temporary, so they will naturally dissipate over time.

Are there bad times to get dermal filler injections?

There are a few good reasons to postpone an injection, particularly if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding or battling a sinus infection. Any infection in the facial area could spread to the injection site. Don’t get a filler right before a teeth cleaning or other dental treatment which require pressure and stretching of the face that could potentially misplace fillers before they have integrated into the tissue.
